Get to Know Estrangement

Prevalence and Demographic Data

  • Overall Prevalence: A 2025 poll found that 38-40% of American adults are estranged from an immediate family member.

  • Parent-Child Estrangement:

    • 26% of fathers reported estrangement from their adult children.

    • 6% to 11% of mothers reported being estranged from their adult children.

    • One study found 10% of adults were actively estranged from a parent or child.

  • Sibling Estrangement: 24% of Americans report being estranged from a sibling.

  • Gender Differences: Women are 22% more likely than men to be estranged from their fathers.

  • Age and Timing: The average age of estrangement is 26 for mothers and 23 for fathers. Estrangement is more common in middle-aged adults, likely due to having more living relatives (parents and adult children).

  • Long-Term Nature: Estrangements from fathers often last the longest, averaging 7.9 years, while those from daughters average 3.8 years.

Common Reasons for Estrangement

Research indicates that "no-contact" decisions are rarely impulsive and usually stem from deeply rooted issues:

American Psychological Association (APA) +1

  • Abuse and Neglect: In one study, 77% of adult children cited emotional abuse as a reason for cutting off mothers, and 59% cited abuse for cutting off fathers.

  • Ideological Differences: Differences in beliefs (religion, politics, lifestyle) are major factors, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals, who are more likely to be estranged from fathers (32%–36% of gay/lesbian/bisexual adults) compared to heterosexual peers.

  • Divorce: A major risk factor is when an adult child breaks ties with a parent who was divorced from the other parent.

  • Manipulative Behavior: Parents often cite this as a reason for estrangement from children, along with conflicting values (21%) and divorce fallout (20%).

Reconciliation and Dynamics

  • Temporary vs. Permanent: Estrangement is often cyclic, not always permanent. One study found that 81% of adult children reported reconciling with their mother at some point, and 69% with their father.

  • Initiator: In parent-child relationships, adult children are more likely to initiate the cutoff (38% vs 20% for parents).

  • Final Straw: While often preceded by years of conflict, 60% of people surveyed in one study cited a specific "final straw" event, such as a child’s birth, a marriage, or a holiday incident.

Socio-Cultural Factors

  • Rise in Awareness: Increased awareness of mental health terms like "narcissism," "toxicity," and "gaslighting" has made people more likely to initiate cutoffs to set boundaries.

  • Shift in Social Norms: The stigma surrounding family estrangement is decreasing, making it more socially acceptable to end toxic relationships.

  • Impact of Holidays: Approximately 9 out of 10 (90%) estranged adults find the Christmas period difficult.

Understanding Family Estrangement

Support for When Connection Breaks Down

Family estrangement is a deeply personal and often painful experience. Whether you're facing a complete emotional cutoff, navigating parental estrangement, or dealing with the impact of sibling estrangement, you're not alone—and healing is possible.

As a qualified coach specialising in family estrangement, I help individuals who feel stuck, lost, or overwhelmed by fractured family ties. Whether the disconnect stems from long-standing conflict, emotional detachment, or the effects of parental alienation, our work together will support you to understand your role, process your emotions, and find peace—whether you choose to reconnect or not.

Some of my clients come to me after being disowned, shunned, or excluded by family or community. Others are adult children who have chosen to step away from toxic or unsafe relationships. Some have experienced chronic absenteeism from a parent or sibling and want to explore how this absence has shaped their self-worth and identity.

No two stories are the same. That’s why I offer a safe, non-judgemental space to unpack what’s happened, learn to self-regulate, and rediscover a sense of personal freedom and stability.
